2019 saw my first “word of the year.” It provided some focus in what felt like a rushed, hazy year. It worked well enough that I decided to pick a word again this year.
2020 has already seen a lot of “vision” language, so I decided to remove any vision or sight words off the list of candidates. There is nothing wrong with vision words; I just want to have my own word. I’m selfish like that.
None of the other words on the list were working for me: make, fail (as in don’t be afraid to), breathe. Good words, just didn’t feel right. Taking a different approach, I thought through the things I would like to do this year:
- try to exercise more
- try to write more
- try to eat better
- try to be more creative
In thinking about these goals, the word “try” jumped out at me. Being a Star Wars fan, Yoda’s voice immediately popped into my head. The wisdom from the beloved Jedi played on repeat in my head. Within seconds I knew what my word should be:
Do
I’m not going to try stuff this year, I am going to do it.
